Tabio currently has a large number of socks made from recycled materials, including recycled polyester
Tabio has been using this material continuously since the Spring/Summer 2022 season. We use a polyester fibre called Lycopet, which is produced using a material recycling process that reuses waste and uses it as raw material for products.
Recycled polyester has high durability, strength and elasticity, and its excellent shape stability means that it does not wrinkle or lose its shape. It also absorbs little moisture but dries quickly, making it dry to the touch. Another major advantage is its ability to block ultraviolet radiation.
Why the PET bottles?
In Japan, it is estimated that over one million bottles are consumed in just 60 seconds. This consumption is even higher on a global scale. In addition, the polyester fibres used in clothing and the raw materials found in PET bottles are very similar. Plastic bottles and plastic products made from polyester fibres are artificially manufactured from oil, coal and natural gas. They are a resource that should be reused and not just thrown away as waste.
Participation of Tabio in the SDG
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the successor to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was unanimously adopted by member states at the United Nations summit in September 2015. The SDGs consist of 17 goals and 169 targets, and commit to "leaving no one behind" on the planet. The SDGs are universal, and Tabio is actively involved in their implementation.
Overproduction and overstocking are major problems in the clothing market. The main cause of this situation is the traditional forecast production system. We have been working to solve these problems with our unique business model: a communication system between the shop and the manufacturers that allows for the sharing of real-time sales information, so that domestic production factories can monitor stock levels and supply only what can be sold.
Our thinking and initiatives have always been inspired by the principles expressed in the SDGs. In announcing our commitment to the SDGs, we have reorganised our past business activities and initiatives to pursue these goals. We tend to overlook the social importance and value inherent in our business activities and initiatives. However, with the various targets and indicators provided by the SDGs, we are confident that we now have a clear goal to achieve. We intend to make a positive contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by using them as a new starting point and by using the various indicators as a compass.
